THERE is a serious influx of bogus corporate governance training institutions that are offering half-baked or borrowed trainings, the Quality Corporate Governance Centre has said.
These bogus trainers are short-changing trainees of their hard-earned monies.
The Quality Corporate Governance Centre are the authors of the first edition of the Code on Corporate Governance in Zimbabwe, and are currently working on the second edition.
Speaking at the Quality Corporate Governance Centre Chairperson’s Lounge 2023 press conference on Tuesday, Advocate Canaan Dube, who is also the body’s founder and chairman, warned people to demand for certification as there is a rise in institutions claiming to offer corporate governance and leadership trainings.
“There is a mushrooming of many institutions who are claiming to have the capacity of training; there is a danger of institutions that are coming in saying they have trainers when they are not.
“One needs to be certified, and we have such trainers for all sectors in Corporate Governance and leadership,” he said.
“There was one we discovered who was using our materials word for word, which short-changed business people and leaders, so people should be on the lookout for bogus trainers who are getting away with murder.
“Bogus trainers will use other people’s work, hence Zimbabweans should demand for proof of certification.”
Meanwhile, the Quality Corporate Governance Centre will be hosting the annual Chairperson’s Lounge at Hwange Safari Lodge from 27 to 30 October 2023.
The event is being supported by Fastjet and 4 May among other sponsors.
The guest of honour will be businessman Mr Shingai Mutasa.
The Quality Corporate Governance Centre chief executive officer Mr Tendai Rusere said the Chairperson’s Lounge is their exclusive event, which they created out of seeing the need of defining what it is to chair in the African space and what does it mean to be a chair at different levels.
“The Chairperson’s Lounge is not just for chairpersons alone. The chairperson is an office that has support around it.
“There’s the company secretary who works directly with the chairperson. There’s the executive team of management that works as well directly with the board. And the chairperson drives what we call the board of directors in achieving an organisation’s strategic goals.
“We are also here to announce that we are currently working on the second edition of the national Code on Corporate Governance of this country. We are one of the first countries in Africa to have a national code on Corporate Governance, and this is all thanks to advocate Canaan Dube, and Quality Corporate Governance Center,” said Mr Rusere.
The Quality Corporate Governance Centre said there is need to establish a board that governs the quality of corporate governance training practice.
Over the years, they have trained over 1 000 corporate boards on right and wrong issues in leading the corporate sector.
They are the only corporate governance training institution trusted by the government to train over 107 state-owned enterprises on corporate governance and the public sector.
