No Lambda variant in Zimbabwe, says Government

Zimbabwe is yet to record cases of the Lambda variant,first reported in Peru, despite recent media reports.

Chief Coordinator of Zimbabwe’s National Response to COVID-19, Dr Agnes Mahomva said:

“The last genome sequencing was done in Kwekwe, where Delta (first detected in India) was picked, when official results are out and verified, it will be officially announced.”

Earlier in the week, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported that Zimbabwe had recorded the latest strains.

South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases acting executive director, Prof Adrian Puren had said:“I know it (Lambda) has been in circulation in about three other countries that include, I think, reports from Zimbabwe, Egypt.”
