African airliner Rwandair is the latest in a several airlines that have turned down Zimbabwe’s surrogate currency – the bond notes, and electronic transfer payments from the country.

This comes amid indications that Zimbabwe has become an unprofitable ticketing destination.

In a statement to its trade partners, Rwandair revealed that with effect from tomorrow (Thursday, January 24) it will stop accepting the surrogate currency.

Said Rwandair:

“Rwanda Air would like to announce its decision to withdraw ticketing authority effective 24 January 2019 from Zimbabwe BSP.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

This means that all of Rwandair’s ticket sales will be issued in United States dollars while only internationally issued credit cards will be accepted.

Prior to this latest development in Zimbabwe’s airlines sector, British Airways operated by Comair withdrew full ticketing in Zimbabwe.

And in 2018 another African airliner, Kenyan Airways also suspended all ticketing from Zimbabwe due to the country’s foreign currency shortages.
