Zimbabwe’s health minister Obediah Moyo has been fired with immediate effect for “inappropriate conduct”.

Obediah Moyo has in recent weeks been linked to a corruption scandal involving the health ministry’s purchasing of coronavirus equipment from controversial firm Drax Consult.

A statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet, which was shared by information minister Nick Mangwana reads:

“His Excellency the President of the
Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde ED Mnangagwa, has in terms of section 340, subsection (1), paragraph (f), as read with section 104, subsection (1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe has removed Dr Obediah Moyo from the office of Cabinet Minister with immediate effect for conduct inappropriate for a Government Minister.”

Although the dismissal statement did not specify the details, Moyo was arrested last month over allegations of corruption around the acquisition of US$60 million worth of medical equipment for the country’s battle against Covid-19.
